On September 10, KISDI (President Kwon Ho-Yeol), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and the Software Policy & Research Institute (SPRi), three ICT specialized research institutions of South Korea, jointly held an online conference called “Digital Triangle Initiatives 2021”.

The conference was held with the aim of predicting how the digital future society will look and proposing (using data from research) the most appropriate policy directions for the development and industrial application of digital technologies.

At this conference, the second such conference after the inaugural conference held last year, KISDI President Kwon gave the opening address, followed by congratulatory remarks by ETRI President Kim Myung-joon and SPRi President Park Hyun-jae. The ensuing technology session was spearheaded by ETRI while the industry session was spearheaded by SPRi.

In the policy session prepared by KISDI, titled "The Platform Evolution of Telecommunication/Broadcast Services", Yeo Jae-hyun, a senior researcher from KISDI, gave a presentation on "Communication Networks in the Platform Economy," and Lee Jong-won, also a senior researcher from KISDI, gave a presentation on "Media and Platform : Competition and the Boundaries of Video Content Services".

In ETRI’s technology session called ‘Changes in the Technology Ecosystem of Global Platform Companies’, Senior Researcher Kim Seong-min delivered a presentation titled ‘The Technology Ecosystem Strategies of Big Tech Platform Companies and Their Implications’, and Senior Researcher Chung Ji-hyung gave a presentation titled ‘Changes in the AI-DATA Platform Environment and Their Implications’.

In SPRi’s industry session, called ‘Transformation of SW into Digital Platforms’, Senior Researcher Yoo Ho-suk gave a presentation titled ‘The Globalization of SW Service Platforms’ and Senior Researcher Kim Joon-yeon gave a presentation on ‘Digital Transformation and Platforms’.

President Kwon Ho-Yeol of KISDI said, “Digital technology, which has proven its true worth during the pandemic, is a kind of social support mechanism, at the heart of which lie digital initiatives.” He then emphasized, “As a venue for discussing concepts ranging from the digital transformations and platforms of industries to systems, policies, and the fairness/reliability and safety afforded by digital societies, the digital triangle initiative could become a forum where the wisdom and strategies of experts can be shared, where new digital horizons for the future of our society can be sought, and where better solutions can be discussed.

This conference will be held not only this year but also every year in the future as a venue where ICT policy directions and technical solutions for advancing South Korea's development and innovations can be presented.
