The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) held the 2023 Symposium for Research on ICT-based Solutions to Social Issues under the theme of “Social challenges for the desirable use and responsible development of generative AI” at Ferrum Hall, Ferrum Tower in Seoul on Thursday, November 3. The symposium was broadcast live simultaneously.

This symposium, sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT, focused on the theme of a desirable AI society and examined the characteristics and socioeconomic impacts of human- machine interactions, which are intensifying with generative AI, and discussed ways to promote the appropriate, ethical utilization of AI.

Presentations and panel discussions involving experts from industry, academia, and research and working in such diverse fields as the humanities, business economics, law, and the technology industries discussed the social tasks and measures necessary for the appropriate use and development of generative AI from a multidisciplinary perspective.

In the first session, presentations were given on “A new era of human-machine cooperation: experiments on generative AI and labor” and “Measures for securing human resources based on technology value chains for a desirable AI society” under the general theme of generative AI and changes in labor.

KISDI Research Fellow Ahram Moon introduced the results of experimental economics research on the changes that AI will bring to the labor market and the impact of generative AI on work capacity in a presentation titled “A new era of human-machine cooperation: experiments on generative AI and labor.” He also emphasized the role of humans in adopting advanced technology in order to implement a desirable AI society by considering the social context and preferences.

KISDI Associate Research Fellow Hyun-Kyong Lee, in a presentation titled “Measures for securing human resources based on the technology value chain for a desirable AI society,” introduced research on the importance of competency measurement to secure the labor force in the AI era and how to train AI professionals based on technology value chains using competency data.

In the second session, presentations were given on the theme of the legal and regulatory system response for a desirable AI society.

Yoon-Myeong Kim, Director of the Digital Policy Research Institute, discussed the view that generative AI’s prompt creation is a creative expression of human thoughts and emotions, and that the copyright will belong to the user, in a presentation titled “Who owns copyright in the generative AI era?”

KISDI Research Fellow Eunjeong Kwon presented the results of a legal policy study conducted to derive normative implications from changes in labor and creative activities due to the introduction of generative artificial intelligence, and discussed the need to maintain a friendly relationship between humans and AI under the theme of “Legal and regulatory issues and challenges in the context of human-AI interaction.”

In the third session, presentations were given on “Topography of the generative AI industry ecosystem” and “Economic and industrial opportunities brought about by generative AI” under the theme of generative AI and economic opportunities.

Professor Seong-Min Jeon of Gachon University proposed a framework to explain the structural dynamics of the generative AI ecosystem and suggested strategies for promoting the AI industry under the topic of “Topography of the generative AI industry ecosystem.”

Ki-Young Kim, CEO of Artificial Society, gave a presentation on “Economic and industrial opportunities brought about by generative AI” to describe the opportunities and crises facing all industries, including AI, due to generative AI and the industry cycle and the current situation of returning to opportunities.

Next, Professor Seong-Wook Hong of Seoul National University moderated a general discussion on “Issues and policy directions for the appropriate utilization and responsible development of generative AI.” The panelists included Professor Deok-Gyu Kim of Sungkyunkwan University, Professor Seung-Min Lee of Sungkyunkwan University, and Professor Jun-Bae Lee of National Defense University.
