The Korean Information Society Development Institute and the Ministry of Science and ICT held ‘a policy seminar on the Introduction of Human-centered Artificial Intelligence’ on February 2 (Tue) at Seoul The-K Hotel.
The policy seminar was held amid growing interest in the development and ethical use of artificial intelligence due to the recent controversy surrounding the artificial intelligence Chatbot 'Iruda', in order to seek practical ways to establish an “ethics of artificial intelligence” in our society and gather a range of opinions from diverse fields. As such, this event was especially meaningful in that it sought a balanced policy direction based on opinions from the field coupled with extensive social deliberation and discussion about AI ethics, in the belief that the ethical issues surrounding AI must not impede the development of AI technology and the related industry, which are currently in the growth stage.
The seminar consisted of presentations on topics related to the ethical use of artificial intelligence ethics and discussion sessions involving experts from academia, corporate circles, and civic groups.
Kicking off the presentation session, Moon Jung-wook, director of the Center for AI & Social Policy of the Korean Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), announced the main contents of “The Artificial Intelligence Ethics Standards and the major tasks for 2021.” This was followed by a presentation titled “The direction and challenges of ethical education in connection with AI ethics standards” delivered by Professor Byun Sun-yong of Seoul National University, and a second presentation titled 'Measures for securing trust in artificial intelligence technology' by Lee Hyeon-gyu, AI and data PM of the Institute of Information & Communications Technology Planning and Evaluation (IITP).
During the discussion session, which was held on 'The Challenges and Tasks for Realizing Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence', Executive Director Lee Ho-yeong of the Korean Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) took the chair and presided over a discussion about the direction of follow-up measures for the establishment of ethical standards for artificial intelligence, such as the preparation of an artificial intelligence ethics checklist for each subject and ethics education, and tabled opinions from various fields and suggestions for the government in response to the ethical issues raised on artificial intelligence, etc.
Among the representatives from academia were Professor Goh Hak-su of the Law School of Seoul National University, Professor Kim Hyo-eun of the Department of Liberal Arts of Hanbat University, Professor Byun Sun-yong of the Department of Ethics Education of Seoul National University of Education, and Professor Lee Su-young of the KAIST Artificial Intelligence Center. Representatives from industry included Kang Yong-seong, CEO of Wisenut, Kim Dae-won, director of Kakao, and Park Woo-cheol, a lawyer of Naver, while civic groups were represented by Shin Min-soo, a professor at Hanyang University and a co-representative of the Green Consumer Network in Korea.
The policy seminar was broadcast live via the Ministry of Science and ICT's YouTube and Naver TV channels and a separate URL link, and public opinions were collected in the form of online comments. Those interested can watch the seminar video in the media room on the KISDI website or on KISDI YouTube.
