At the Asia Pacific Telecommunity (APT) meeting held on July 1, Senior Research Fellow Mina Jun of the International Cooperation Research Division, Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), was elected chairperson of the preparatory group for the 2022 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP-22) to be held in Romania for three weeks from September 26 to October 10, 2022.

As the highest voting body of the ITU held every four years, the plenipotentiary conference is attended by government delegations from 193 ITU member countries. The meeting is both a venue for electing individuals to serve in high-ranking positions (e.g. secretary-general) or as board members for the next four years and an opportunity to discuss various items of agenda including the strategies and operational plans of the ITU. At the Asia-Pacific PP-22 Preparatory Group to be held on July 1, the chairperson will be elected and the working group formed, and, during the next one-year period, various follow-up tasks will be completed, culminating in the submission of the Asia-Pacific joint proposal to the PP-22.

Senior Research Fellow Jun has served the APT as the chairperson of the APT Management Committee's Legal Documents Subcommittee, vice-chairperson of the Policy Regulation Forum, and chairperson of the WG1 for the Preparatory Group of the 2021 Telecommunications Development General Assembly. In her new position as the chairperson of the WG1 for the PP-22 Preparatory Group, she will lead the discussion of key issues in the legal and policy areas of the ITU. Also, Manager Choi Sung-joon from the Ministry of Science and ICT was elected as the vice-chairperson of the PP-22 Preparatory Group plenary session.

The next preparatory conference of the Asia-Pacific region is scheduled for February of 2022, and the joint proposal for Asia-Pacific will be finalized through three series of additional meetings.
