The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) held a seminar on the “Current Status of and Prospects for Domestic Satellite Communication” at the COEX Conference Room in Seoul on Thursday, November 30, 2023. The seminar, which ran from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m., focused on the present and future of the domestic satellite communications industry.
At the seminar held by KISDI, Minchul KIM, Executive Director of the Division of Digital Infrastructure Services Research at KISDI, and experts from ETRI, Korea University, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), and KISDI gave presentations on technological developments, marketability, legal and institutional aspects, and satellite communications' role in the national defense and space business strategies.
In the first presentation, Professor Young-chae KO from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Korea University introduced the latest trends and future development directions of laser-based wireless communication systems and inter-satellite communication technology in a presentation titled “Introduction to Low-orbit Inter-satellite Communication Technology based on Wireless Optical Communication.” Professor KO’s presentation covered techniques for improving the data transmission speed in low-orbit satellite systems, laser-based wireless communication systems, handover techniques and advanced technologies.
Next, Minchul KIM, Executive Director of KISDI’s Division of Digital Infrastructure Services Research, gave a presentation titled "Analysis of the Acceptance of Satellite Communications in Korea and Its Future Marketability, with the Focus on B2C". The presentation analyzed the results of a survey of 1,700 Koreans’ perception and acceptance of satellite communication and discussed the potential and developmental direction of domestic B2C satellite communication services.
Dr. Min-su SHIN of ETRI’s Satellite Communication Research Division gave a presentation on the development of and market outlook for low-orbit satellite communication technology, which has recently attracted considerable attention, under the topic of “Current Status of and Prospects for Low-orbit Satellite Communications.”
Man-gyu PARK, an official at the Space & C4I Program Department of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), gave a presentation on the "National Defense and Space Business Promotion Strategy" related to the utilization of satellites in national defense.
Min-suk LEE, head of the Department of Telecommunications Competition Policy Research at KISDI, and Kim Ji-hwan, head of the Department of Spectrum Network Strategy Research at KISDI, discussed the current legal and regulatory system and policy direction under the topic of "Legal System Issues related to Satellite Communications."
Lastly, the seminar wrapped up with a panel discussion and a question-and-answer session on the future of satellite communications and future policy directions, which was chaired by Professor Chung-gu KANG of Korea University.
The panelists included Yeon-jin KIM, head of the Radio and Broadcasting Management Division of the Ministry of Science and ICT; Moon-sik LEE, head of the Satellite Communication Research Division of ETRI; Professor Shin-woong KWAK from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Kookmin University; Professor Do-hoon KIM from the College of Management of Kyung Hee University; Kyeong-il CHOI, Executive Director of SAT Technology at KT; Seong-chan SONG, head of Hanwha Systems' Space Research Center; and Minchul KIM, Executive Director of the Division of Digital Infrastructure Services Research at KISDI.
