Generally speaking, a virtual mobile communication network operator rents a network from a mobile communication operator and provides mobile communication services to users. Because this is a business that requires a relatively small initial capital investment when compared with building one’s own proprietary network, over the years many different types of virtual mobile communication network operators have entered the market around the world.
Due to structural differences in capital and equipment levels, it is very difficult for a virtual mobile communication network operator to gain a competitive advantage over network-owning operators. Despite such a disadvantage, there are many cases of virtual mobile communication network operators becoming competitive through technological and service innovations.
In this report, we will introduce cases of overseas virtual mobile communication network operators who have succeeded in becoming competitive players, analyze their services from the supply and demand perspective, and derive the implications for the domestic market.
