The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI), together with the Korea Communications Commission, held the 2023 IBCC (International Conference for Broadcast Co-Production) under the theme of “Local Insights, Global Outlooks: Sharing Asian Stories with the World” at The K Hotel Seoul on Thursday, September 21.
The IBCC is an annual event held by KISDI and the Korea Communications Commission to promote co-production between countries and increase international interest in K-content. Launched in 2016, the IBCC is celebrating its eighth anniversary this year.
The conference consists of keynote speeches, a special session for the guest country and Asian sessions, expert round tables, and the presentation of awards to the winners of the 2023 Overseas Outstanding Co-Production Awards. SBS President Jung-hoon Park delivered the keynote address titled “SBS’s Co-Production Strategy through Overseas Localization of the Korean Wave.”
Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI) Chairman Ubaidillah gave a speech, and Vice Chairman Mohammad Reza and Secretary General Gilang Iskandar of the Private Broadcasting Association gave the presentations. At the end of the special session, Dr. Johannes Ekaprasetya Tanjung, attending the IBCC on behalf of the Indonesian Ambassador to Korea, gave a presentation titled “From the K-Wave to the I-Wave: 50 Years of Friendship between Korea and Indonesia.”
In the subsequent Asia Session 1, Professor Jeong-soo Lim of Seoul Women's University moderated a discussion following the presentation given by Mika Kanaya (Head of International Content Development for NHK, Japan) on “40 Years of International Co- Production between Asia and Japan: Why Our Story Is Important” and that given by Nini Binti Yusoff (CEO of Media Prima Studio, Malaysia) on “Global Co-production for Brand Entertainment Content.”
In Asia Session 2, Professor Yoon-kyung Jeong of Suncheonhyang University moderated a discussion following the presentation delivered by Danasak Funarak (Thailand, Chief Business Development Officer of Workpoint Group) on “The Advantages of Co-Production between Asian Countries and Co-Production Solutions for Each Country's Market,” that given by Nuyen Min Ha (Vietnam, VTV PD) on “Co-production, the Core of VTV Content Diversity,” and that by Ekambileg Batarsuren (Mongolia, head of NTV broadcasting production) on “Media Content Co-Production: Uniting Mongolia, Korea, and Asia.”
After the presentations, the winners of this year's Overseas Outstanding Co-Production Award* discussed their production processes and experiences; and, finally, at the Round Table, Korean and international co-production experts discussed the difficulties of, and the need to revitalize, international co-production.
