The Korea Communications Commission (KCC) and the Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) held the 5th International Conference on User Protection in the Intelligent Information Society at the Post Tower in Myeong-dong on Friday, December 1.

This annual event, which was launched in 2019 and celebrates its 5th anniversary this year, provides a venue for domestic and foreign experts to discuss ethical and governance issues related to new technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), and the metaverse, in line with the rapid ongoing changes in the intelligent information society.

At this year’s event, held under the theme of “Generative AI and Humans,” experts discussed cooperation and conflict between generative AI and humans, which has become a hot topic in our society with the emergence of ChatGPT.

The conference consisted of three sessions.

The first session was led by academia. Professor S. Shyam Sundar of Pennsylvania State University, USA gave a keynote presentation on measures for building trust based on social responsibility under the theme of “Generative AI and Human Psychology,” while Professor Yong-jun SEONG of Korea University gave a presentation on trust, privacy, and AI technology under the theme of “The Era of Artificial Intelligence.”

In the second session, Microsoft Asia General Manager Mike Yeh, representing the industry, gave a presentation on ethical and sustainable AI under the theme of “Challenges and Opportunities in the Era of Generative AI”, followed by Naver Cloud Leader Lee Hwa-ran’s presentation on a safe and reliable, super-large language model under the theme of “Responsible AI.”

In the third and final session, domestic and foreign experts discussed the topic of “Generative AI and Humans.” Professor Jun-hwan LEE of Seoul National University acted as moderator, while four presenters, namely Professor Sang-wook LEE of Hanyang University, Professor Jae-sik CHOI of KAIST, Associate Research Fellow Hyun-kyung LEE of KISDI, and Director Suk-hyun HAN of Seoul YMCA, participated in the discussion.

Based on the various opinions discussed at the conference, the KCC announced that it would prepare related systems to ensure that the principles which our society pursues as community values, such as public safety, human rights protection, and democratic decision-making, are maintained in AI services without hindering the revitalization of the AI industry.
