The 13th Advanced Network Workshop(ANW), co-hosted by Advanced Network Forum(ANF), Korea Information Society Development Institute(KISDI), Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information(KISTI) and National Information Society Agency(NIA), was held on April 19 – 20 attended by about one hundred major figures, related officials and researchers including Byung-Tae Yang, President of KISTI, Hoick Suk, President of KISDI, Chang-Kon Kim, President of NIA.
The ANW is a workshop held bi-annually to discuss current development status and future direction of a variety of advanced networks among related institutions and experts. Since the last one, the workshop has been extended to two days reflecting an increased interest of governments, academia and research institutions in the technology.
Prof. Gwang-Hwe Kim, who delivered a key-note speech at the plenary session, suggested that we take note of "OptIPuter" environment. It means an advanced research environment that binds supercomputers, high-capacity storage devices and advanced visualization equipment together as a giant single computer which can visualize vast amount of material equivalent to tens of thousands of CDs into 3-D video data in real time and transmit them to every country in the world at the speed of 10GB/s.
After welcome speeches made by Dae-Young Kim, a committee chairperson at ANF and Byung-Tae Yang, President of KISTI, Hoick Suk received wild applause making an impromptu speech about his expectations that the workshop could play a key role in promoting the development of Korea’s IT field including advanced network.
At the first day of the workshop, a total of six sessions were held including R&E Network, USN/Wireless, IPTV, Security, HDTV/Conference, Climate/Physics, etc, with three of each for track A and B respectively. On the R&E Network session Dr. Byung-Kyu Kim of KISDI chaired, presentations on current status and development plans of international research networks such as APII, TEIN2 and GLORIAD as well as major domestic research networks such as KOREN and KREONET, were made. The Climate/Physics session featured a series of presentations by major speakers involved in tasks supported by APIICC.
On the 16th, the second day of the conference, seven sessions including Grid/e-Science, Optical(Lambda) Networking, IPv6, Measurement, Medical, Future Internet and R&D Testbed Activity were held followed by panel discussion. The discussion among key staff from each institute centered around ways to newly establish development directions of research networks and cooperate with one another.
In particular, during diner prepared at the first day, Bo-Hyun Seo, Vice President of Planning and Coordination Office at KISDI, received a service plaque for his outstanding contribution to the field of international research network from the ANF.
