KISDI co-hosted the "Korea-World Bank Workshop in Mongolia: Broadband for Mongolia's Development" on Oct 27 in Ulan Bator, Mongolia. In the opening session, KISDI President Suk-Ho Bang made a keynote speech on the importance of broadband policy for economic growth and national competitiveness.

President Bang briefed on KISDI's "ICT Policy Project" for broadband policy development in Mongolia, and proposed experts from Korea, the World Bank, and Mongolia share their experience in broadband policy and technology development, and create a new model that maximizes the benefits of synergy among different policy consultation projects.

President Bang also met with Communications Regulatory Commission Chairman Boldbaatar Bat-Amgalan after the workshop to discuss plans for future research cooperation.

Senior ICT Policy Specialist Tenzin Norbhu with the World Bank expressed keen interest in the KISDI Consulting Group's research outcome and wished success of the Mongolia project.

The KISDI consultants and the World Bank's Universal Access project representatives were able to share their study results, thereby facilitating the establishment and execution of the broadband masterplan for Mongolia.

KISDI has been in charge of ICT policy consultation and cooperation projects for developing countries since 2004 under the sponsorship of the Korea Communications Commission, and it was the first time for the institute to co-host such a workshop with the World Bank to disclose research results.

During his stay in Mongolia, President Bank met with President Sansar Jiimen of the Information Communications Technology and Post Authority and signed an MOU for broadband development. The major components of the MOU include: policy and regulation consultation; exchange of ICT-related information and publications; ICT expert training; and cooperation with international organizations.

KISDI and ICTPA agreed to cooperate more closely going forward to ensure vibrant policy and technology exchanges between the ICT sectors of the two countries. The MOU is expected to accelerate Korean ICT firms' entry to Mongolia and give a significant boost to ICT research, since it is also aimed at upgrading investment environment through joint research and increasing cooperation with international bodies such as ITU and APT.
