The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) held 'KISDI Global Conference 2012 - Internet & the ICT Ecosystem' sponsored by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) on September 3 at the conference hall of Korea Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KCCI). This conference consisted of Session 1: 'The Power of Internet' and Session 2: 'The Changing ICT Business and Landscape' and looked into the Internet-led development of ICT ecosystem and its policy implications.
Stuart Taylor, Managing Director of CISCO presented, in his keynote speech 'The Next Generation of the Internet -Revolutionizing the Way that We Work, Live, Play and Learn', ten future technological trends of the Internet including mobile, cloud and OTT. He also emphasized that the next generation of the Internet, as a platform in our daily lives, is expected to provide both challenges and opportunities to ICT industry, and governments would play an important role in developing the industry and creating an environment for maximized users' benefits.
In Session 1, Prof. IlSoon Shin of Inha University made a presentation, under the title 'The Internet economy in Korea: Pros and Cons', on the size of Korea's Internet economy, Internet economy's growth contribution, and consumer surplus. He provided an analysis that the share of Internet economy to GDP is large but its growth contribution is small because of the maturity of Internet economy and regulations in Korea.
Dr. Daniel Nepelski, Research Fellow of Institute for Prospective Technological Studies said in his presentation 'Mapping the Dynamics of the Global ICT Innovation Ecosystem' about the current status of Internet economy and ICT ecosystem in Europe and new dynamics of ICT innovation, emphasizing the importance of 'global innovation network'.
In Session 2, Tim Jennings, Ovum Chief Analyst made a presentation on 'The Impact of Cloud, Big Data and Consumerization on the ICT Business Landscape' providing the prospect for the development of cloud-based platforms and strategies to utilize big data as a new opportunity.
Dr. YongSeop Yum, Director of SK Research Institute talked about, under the title 'Joining Content and Smart Ecosystem Together', on-line integration of content and the effects of platforms as a rule-setter in Smart ecosystem, and he also stressed that master plans should be laid down to enhance competitiveness in ICT ecosystem.
YoungHoon Kim, Managing Director of Microsoft and NamHoon Kwon, Professor at Konkook University served as panelists in Session 1 moderated by Dr. SangWon Ko, Executive Director of KISDI International Cooperation Research Division, and JungRyul Kim, Internet Policy Division Director of KCC and SeonKyu Choi, Professor at Myungji University joined as panelists Session 2 moderated by HyunSoo Kim, CEO of the Korea Federation of Information Technology Society.
KISDI Global Conference 2012 provided a meaningful opportunity to look into the paradigm of ICT and its effects on the economy, broadcasting, communications and media and to explore development strategies. This conference is expected to offer a policy direction based on various views and ideas presented at the conference by experts from industry, academia and research institutes.
