KISDI held the 2023 Information/Communication, Broadcasting, and International Development Cooperation Forum on "Data for Development" on August 9. KISDI carries out ODA projects of the Ministry of Science and ICT and has been planning and running a forum in collaboration with the ICT4D Research Subcommittee of the Korea Association of International Development and Cooperation (KAIDEC) since 2018.
Amid the current data revolution, where the role of data is being emphasized more than ever before in efforts to achieve sustainable development goals in developing countries, international organizations such as the OECD and the World Bank have published a series of flagship reports on data and are actively continuing discussions on data generation and utilization and data platforms for development.
Therefore, KISDI selected the topic of “data for development” for the 2023 Information/Communication, Broadcasting and International Development Cooperation Forum in order to share the contents of research in this field and conduct panel discussions.
In session 1, Professor Woo-jin Cheong of Rutgers University delivered a presentation titled “Development of poverty indicators and improvement of the distribution of social safety net programs using AI/ML”; Professor Ga-young Park of the State University of New York, Korea discussed “Measures for constructing and evaluating a sustainable and comprehensive metaverse participation environment considering the use of unstructured data”; and Associate Research Fellow Seol-ah Bang of the Korea Research Institute for Human Settlements gave a presentation on “Measures for building a spatial information portal for the integrated implementation of ODA.”
In session 2, which followed the presentations, a panel chaired by Professor Hee-jin Lee of Yonsei University and composed of Professor Hanna Joo of Hallym University, Jin-hyeon Bae of Samsung Electronics and Professor Ga-young Park of the State University of New York, Korea discussed in depth the importance of data from the perspective of development cooperation.
KISDI plans to operate this forum as a platform for critical analysis and in-depth discussions on ODA research in the ICT field with officials from Korea's ODA project implementation agencies and researchers.
