The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) held the “3rd Open Forum for Humanities and Technology: Humanities Meets Technology” on November 10, 2015 at International Hall of Sungkyunkwan University.
Under the theme of “Global Startup Fever: The World Eaten by Software”, this forum, co-hosted by KISDI and the Department of Interaction Science of Sungkyunkwan University, was proceeded by Prof. Lee Dae-ho of Sungkyunkwan University as the moderator with the theme presentation by Lim Jung-wook, Managing Director of Startup Alliance.
In his presentation, Lim explained how the world is transforming into an startup-friendly environment with decreasing startup costs, the emergence of global mobile platforms, the opening of the social media era and the introduction of cloudsourcing platforms, and introduced the cases of software-based startup success stories, including Uber, Xiaomi, and DJI, each of which is estimated to be worth trillions won, as well as their hidden values. He also discussed the cases of Korean startups and what has to be done to help produce more startups in Korea.
Lim diagnosed Korea’s current ICT industry environment as “a state of blocked metabolism”. In the following Q&A session, Prof. Lee discussed with the audience ways to reestablish the normal functioning of the Korean economy’s metabolism.
